You know those friends who’ve been in your life for so long that you can’t even remember a time before them? The ones who have seen you grow from an awkward kid to an adult with responsibilities (and hopefully better fashion choices)? That’s Shannon for me.
We met in kindergarten—two little kids who had no idea we’d still be connected decades later. We shared Luncables, went to each other’s birthday parties, and pretty much grew up side by side. At one point, we even dated guys from the same family because, clearly, we were committed to doing everything together. And now, after all these years, I had the absolute joy of attending her wedding!
Like many friendships, ours has had its ebbs and flows. Life pulled us in different directions—me off to school in another country, her moving out of state. There were years where we didn’t see each other at all. But somehow, we always found our way back to each other.
Sometimes, it was through a random text message that started with, “Hey, remember when we…” and spiraled into hours of reminiscing. Other times, it was a quick comment on social media that turned into a full conversation. And every now and then, we’d get lucky enough to catch up in person, picking up right where we left off, as if no time had passed at all.
That’s the beauty of lifelong friendships. They don’t require constant upkeep, just a mutual understanding that no matter how much time or distance comes between you, you’ll always be part of each other’s story.
When Shannon invited me to her wedding, I was beyond excited. It felt like another milestone in our long history—one more moment we could add to our collection of shared memories.
Of course, weddings are hectic. If you’ve ever been part of one, you know the bride is basically the celebrity of the event—everyone wants a moment of her time. I knew we wouldn’t get to hang out like old times, and that was okay. What mattered was that she wanted me there, to be part of this huge, beautiful chapter in her life.
As I watched her say “I do,” I couldn’t help but think back to the little girls we once were—braiding each other’s hair, whispering secrets, and dreaming about the future. And here she was, stepping into that future with the person she chose to spend forever with.
We don’t always get to keep everyone in our lives forever. People come and go, friendships change, and life has a way of shifting our paths. But every once in a while, you find those rare connections that stand the test of time.
Shannon and I may not see each other as often as we used to, but I know we’ll always find our way back to each other—through texts, social media, or random meetups that feel like no time has passed at all.
Here’s to lifelong friendships, love, and always making space for the people who truly matter. 💕
